Down the rabbit hole...

Updated: Jun 15, 2023

alice in wonderland and the white rabbit

Alice in Wonderland is one of my all-time favourite children’s classics. Written by Lewis Caroll and published in 1865, this novella takes readers on a wacky and whimsical adventure when the protagonist of the story: Alice tumbles down the rabbit hole.

This is a book that is just bursting with imagination, fantastical world-building, witty humour and crazy characters.

Fun facts about Alice in Wonderland...

- This iconic story was originally called “Alice’s Adventures Underground.”

- “Lewis Caroll” is just a pen name, and the author was actually called Charles Lutwidge -Dodgson!

- Lewis Caroll actually worked a number of different jobs, including being a mathematician, a photographer, a clergyman, and an artist.

- This book has been translated into one hundred and seventy five languages!

A few of the most notable characters include...

I think that the colourful characters within this book, are so iconic because of their distinctive personalities and appearances the characters that I have mentioned below are just a few of my favourites within a fabulous cast...

Alice: Alice is the seven year old protagonist of the story; she acts as the novel’s heroine as she adapts quickly to her curious new surroundings in Wonderland, despite being so well adjusted to typical Victorian society. However, she does often get frustrated at the topsy-turvy nonsensicalness of Wonderland.

My favourite quote said by Alice:

'I know who I was when I got up this morning, but I think I must have been changed several times since then'

The Queen of Hearts: The Queen of Hearts is the frightful and grim-faced ruler of Wonderland. She is most well known for her famous catchphrase “Off with their heads!”.

My Favourite quote said by The Queen Of Hearts:

'Now, I give you fair warning, either you or your head must be off, and that in about half no time! Take your choice!'

The Cheshire Cat: The Cheshire Cat is portrayed as a clear-headed, but snarky and mysterious navigator for Alice. His wisdom explains the logic of wonderland to both Alice and readers; and he guides Alice through Wonderland with a perpetual grin.

My Favourite quote said by The Cheshire Cat:

Cheshire Cat: Oh, you can’t help that, we’re all mad here. I'm mad. You’re mad.

Alice: How do you know I’m mad?

The Cheshire Cat: You must be or you wouldn't have come here.

The Mad Hatter: The Mad Hatter is a talkative, unpredictable and quirky character who can sometimes come across as rather rude. He upsets Alice when he asks the riddle “Why is a raven like a writing desk?” and does not know the answer himself. He is known for his love of tea parties and his 'Un-Birthday' celebrations.

My Favourite quote said by The Mad Hatter:

'If you knew Time as well as I do, you wouldn’t talk about wasting it. It’s him' ' I dare say you never even spoke to Time!'
